The Big World According to Little Hunterman by Hunter Lassal:
23: A Doggie Super-Stare Wee
Doggies and cats have several amazing super-stares at their disposal.
There are two basic cat stares that I have observed from Baghaval.
One is the stare that goes right through you as if you were not present (or as if you were not WORTHY of being present). The other one seems to say, “Shall I eat you now or later?”
I find both cat stares quite intimidating, to be honest with you.
Doggie stares are different, though.
One of the most common doggie stares is the I-love-you-so-very-much-and-if-you-love-me-even-a-little-bit-back-then-you-would-not-mind-letting-me-have-that-insignificant-piece-of-food stare.
Yeah, long name.
This stare works really well on my Tony-human while my Lassal-human is easier convinced with brainy arguments.
In her case, the I-love-you-and-you-know-that-I-love-you-and-I-know-that-you-know-that-I-love-you-and-because-love-is-totally-important-we-both-know-that-you-will-end-up-giving-me-this-tiny-piece-of-yummy-food-anyway-because-it-is-NOTHING-compared-to-my-love-for-you-so-why-wait-any-longer? stare is the better choice.
Yeah, precise names are important. How else would you keep the stares apart?
Just to be clear, super-stares have nothing to do with common staring contests.
While super-stares are a loving & nurturing tool-thingy to train your humans, staring contests are more about who gets the first big bite of the sausage.
Staring contests work well long distance (like across a room) but they can also totally work nose-to-nose, if necessary.
I’m rather good at staring contests. I’ve never lost a staring contest but once. And that was only because Flynn got me distracted.
There is a very special mixed form of stare: our X-ray super-stare!
This one goes through chairs, books, windows, newspapers, and suchlike. Its main aim to is gain your human’s attention. It requires the mostest intensity from all the stares that I have mentioned above.
Don’t worry, a strong will and perseverance will get you there.
And besides, the rewards are totally worth it!
Soft nose nudges.
And thank you for supporting me.

My Mads has those same stares but she also has the "I'm going to stare at you until you wake up to ______ (insert play, feed, snuggle, go outside) with me!" She is really good at it too...
